I recently had the honor of interviewing Brian Barczyk of BHB Reptiles via email. I wanted to share some of the questions and his answers to them here at Reptile Geeks. You can find Brian's profile here at RG at www.reptilegeeks.com/snakebytestv.

What was your first snake? Not necessarily your first large, cared for snake, but the first snake you recall bringing home to mom and dad? I used to collect garter snakes in the local woods about a block from my house. Now I know it was a Butlers Garter that I named Slinky. I was about four years old and I had to keep it in the garage. My Mom hated snakes then, I don't think she's changed her mind much:)

Good to know that I'm not the only one with a mom who doesn't care for snakes. Of course I also don't have a huge business built around them either...

What is the state of the Ball python market in particular and the snake market in general today? I think that the market is stronger then ever for us. As the price of Ball Pythons have come down the chance to buy these incredible morph are now within reach. Before to buy a Pinstripe you needed $25,000!! That was a ton of money, now you can pick one up for less them $1000. That's still a lot of money, but it's within reach of most people. I also think that the entire market continues to grow. Every year we sell more snakes then the year before, so I think as a whole we're in great shape.

I have to admit to being surprised that the market is as strong as Brian says it is. Generally with a weakening economy you can expect things like pets of any kind to quickly lose popularity. Glad to hear that's not the case!

How many shows do you attend a year on average? At the peak of our traveling we did 43 shows in one year all over the country. We now sell so much either out of the country or mail order, we've reduced our shows to five shows a year. We do the Daytona Expo and all the NARBC show. We've thought about adding a show or two this year, but we haven't made any plans yet.

I can't say I blame him. Traveling all over the place, especially for business can get real old real quick.

Who do you sell your snakes to? In other words what is the primary market you focus on? We are a kind of a unique company because we try to serve all aspects of the market. Most big production companies really produce for large quantity wholesale and won't even consider a small order. We do sell some of our production that way, but we don't shy away from dealing with the person that is buying their first snake. We love dealing with everyone and hope to be able to keep it that way.

There aren't a lot of industries that can serve "all" aspects of a market, but snake breeding is probably one that can do so for a long time to come.

The interview continues at Pet-Snakes.com where Brian answers more questions such as:

  • How do neighbors react to your business?
  • Do you have a formal education in biology, or zoology or a similar area?
  • Do you or have you worked with venomous species?
  • And more!
