Herpin on a Budget guide 2nd edition
Posted On 04/11/2008 08:11:27 by SunsetHerps

This is the 2nd edition to the first one. These are a couple of simple things I forgot to mention, as well as suggestions friends made.

PART 4

TIMERS! Not only does it keep your pets sane, but saves you a couple bux a month with electricity :) The best place I found to buy timers is walmart. The Brinks timers are the ones I prefer. I plug them into the wall then plug your power strip in, and set the time and when I want them on and off. They run 7-20$ per unit, totally worth the investment. They also make a manualog one, which I have never used. Though they are even cheaper!

PART 5

NFARROW mentioned that buying supplies at shows really helps. I cannot say how right she is! That and LLLREPTILE.COM are as close to wholesale as one can get with out having the tax ids and what not to buy direct from hagen and etc. If you can get a couple of friend to chip in for things they want/need you can split shipping. Or carpool to shows!!!

PART 6

Coco nut husk bricks! I cannot express how cheap and easy they are, not to mention they do well with holding the humidity, as long as you keep them damp. You can get 3 for 6$ generally at your pet shops, but I have seen them as much as 5.99$ a brick... which is still more cost effective considering a 21.99$ bag of spagnum moss covers a 40 gal tank... Of coarse everyone has thier preferences, this is just one of mine. I have perfect sheds when I use this, and my animals love to burrow into it :)

PART 7

Moss at hardware shops. You can get the moss at lowes by the BAGS! Great for the additional decoration and humidity retension. :) Make sure there are no harmful additives with anything you buy outside of the pet shop, they could be devistating and deadly to your animals.

PART 8

VERMICULITE AND PERLITE. TOO EASY for you breeders out there that have been spending lots of money for vermiculite, you can buy the same stuff for 3$ a bag at hardware shops such as lowes. I have great success when I use them for incubation, recently I have been trying both perlite and a vermiculite mix, so far so good :)
