Petsmart/Petco
Posted On 05/03/2008 09:22:22 by JDReptiles

Yesterday, I went to go get some crickets for my bearded dragon. The only place that we know of 30 miles from here to get crickets is Petsmart. $.10 a cricket...Rip off huh? Well I wanted to hold a python and see how they were doing. First off...They haven't been selling... so I was think of buying ...2nd of all... They both are babys and they haven't grown. I held them when they first got them and yesterday and they haven't grown. They have been there for a month so I figured to ask when are they eating... He said that they haven't been eating...WHAT? THEY ARE BABIES AND THEY HAVEN'T EATEN YET????? So I asked them what are you feeding them... He said that they've been trying to feed them frozen mice... BIG RED FLAG WAVING THERE Baby balls are supposed to eating 1 to maybe 2 ALIVE mice every week... am I right?

PETSMART IS STARVING THEIR BABY BALL PYTHONS!

I THINK SO IS PETCO

IM ON STRIKE!

I AM NEVER BUYING CRICKETS THERE AGAIN.

For all I know, the crickets there might have been stuffed with chemicals, or raped before... so I am definitely on strike...

I am now wondering if I should call the ASPCA.

Am I going to far or is this the right thing?

Thanks,

Joey

I work at Petco and I am the one who handles the snakes at my store. We feed frozen almost exclusively at the store (as I do at home) the only time a captive bred baby needs to be fed live is if it won't take down a frozen. Every one of my 10 snakes currently in my care at the store eat every week with very little problem.

just thought i'd throw that out there, we're not all bad

Well, I personally think that PetCo and PetSmart have no idea what they are doing.

They are OBVIOUSLY not well trained in the areas of Reptiles etc. We went into a PetCo the other day and the poor leopard geckos were scrawny, their tails, mear nothingness. They all looked depressed really. They are definitely malnourished.  I also don't think that they are aware that they just cant feed them meal worms. They need a diet that is mixed up a bit.

There are a lot of petcos and petsmarts that are taking out their reptiles altogether. They are selling reptiles that NO ONE knows about and ones that are very hard to take proper care of. Also, the fact/care sheets are wrong.

I love local exotic stores. They're the best. :D

I am with you 100% on this one. I recently went into a Petsmart . I noticed a ball python with a pretty bad rectal infection. All the other ball pythons were under a log except for this one. It was very underfed as you could see the spine very clearly. I pointed it out to not ONE......but FOUR different employees. They didnt seem to care too much and referred me to their store vet (who of course....was nowhere to be found). They didnt even bother to look. Im sure this may differ with staff and location.......but this specific petsmart was garbage in my books. I left the place in awe. The next day as I drove by ..........I decided to stop by again. hmmmmmmm did they remove it maybe? Did they atleast take off the mushy birthlike poop dangling from his booty hole?  NEGATIVE!  The ball python was in the same exact spot as it was the day before. Needless to say.....I do not plan on going back.  Bad ju ju.

They just dont know what they are talking about

I don't think you over-reacted, well maybe a little, but not much. Almost every time I've been in a Petsmart - the BPs have been in horrid condition, with old bad sheds stuck to them, etc.

I would never buy a BP from them. Not until they clean up their act, stop buying imports, and make sure it is in their contract with upstream vendor that the young are known to accept f/t if f/t is all they will offer.

Thanks FunkyRes

I won't buy a Ball Python from them. I live near one of the two LLL reptile stores. And I can reach both of them no problem. I will probably buy a corn snake. But not before my cuz GIVES/SURPRISES me with a mexican black kingsnake.
