hi there,

yes - i have always wanted to expand my collection as most herp enthusiasts do - but its not plausable whilst still living in australia.

we have very strict flora and fauna rules including piles of paperwork and endless permits and record keeping even just to have the australian animals. becasue australia has such a delicate balance within its eco systems there is a huge issue of feral species (ie rabbits, cane toads, camels, goats, morning glory, brambles etc) and therefore we are not allowed to keep any reptiles that are not native to australia here.

i do agree that this is the way that the flora and fauna government unit needs to run its protection scheme but in the end it is a bit of a pitty that i cant keep any exotics until i move overseas!

Have you ever considered keeping any North American colubrid species?

All that paperwork would be a bummer, but I totally get it now that I think of all the invasive species...especially in light of what has happened here with burms and anacondas in the Everglades. But not to worry, Oz has some of the coolest native species anywhere. Its kinda the opposite here where I live. We are not allowed to keep native species without a permit. They do it to deter collectors from catching in the wild and selling at reptile shows. One of my biggest desires is to keep a pair of jet black black ratsnakes. I used to catch them as a kid. But they are native and I cant. Two edge sword I guess.
