Crazy about reptiles
Posted On 02/25/2008 18:58:00

I got bit by the reptile bug around 11 years ago

I stopped keeping multiple tanks of tropical fish (due to arthritis in my hands) and had a whole bunch of empty aquariums that I refused to get rid of as I knew that I would have another use for them eventually

My first reptile was a Bearded Dragon of unknown age which I purchased from a pet shop
He was a "trade in" from a customer and was nearly full grown
I had been looking at the reptile section there for quite a while before I took the plunge and was really excited when I took my new pet home

I have learned a lot since that day-mostly from reading books and joining forums on the web and I actually kept only that one reptile for quite a few years before I got bit by the gecko bug
My next lizards were two normal leopard geckos from a local breeder and over the past 11 years i have aquired many more beardies and geckos and other lizards

While I love snakes-to look at and even handle-I have no desire to keep any-mostly due to the fact that they eat rodents
I had a hard enough time getting used to keeping and caring for live bugs and never wanted to progress to a freezer ful of mice-lol

I currently have around 40 Leopard Geckos-2 Bluey's-8 African Fat Tailed Geckos-5 Crested Geckos-3 Gargoyle Geckos-2 Leachies and one Box Turtle

Oppsss-I always forget about the one Tokay Gecko that I have had for around 5 or 6 years

Our local pet store has snce closed and the nearest one to me is now around 40 or 50 miles away-either north or south
I have discovered the ease of buying reptiles online and have added to my collection mostly that way in the past 5 years
I have dealt with many breeders of various species of
lizards and have had positive experiences with the exception of 2 transactions
Not a bad average for all of the animals that I have purchased online

I really enjoy keeping reptiles and although I have bred very few of them-they keep me smiling when things get rough or I am feeling down

I have a few projects in mind for this coming year
Most likely-I will breed Harry and Sally-my 2 Bearded Dragons in a few months

Sally is so pretty and Harry has great genetics so I am really curious to see what color babies that they will produce

I guess that's it for now

We are currently expecting yet another 4 to 6 inches of snow here in Central IL. and I have managed to get out to the stores and get everything that I need for the week

Will spring ever get here?
I am so tired of winter......
