Posted On 01/17/2008 09:15:56
Woohoo!!! My beardie eggs are hatching out. They are soo adorable. Its a great experience getting to see them push through the egg and fully emerge. I am soo stoked about it. So far 7 babies have fully emerged. I only had 7 eggs that were infertile out of the first clutch. I will be posting pictures of the babies in my photo gallery soon. These little cuties will be up for sale soon too.

Breeding Mealworms

Breeding Mealworms

Take a rubber maid tub (20 quart should be plenty) and use a substrate of oats and bran. I also use commercial cricket feed, ground up alfalfa pellets and fish flakes sprinkled in. The substrate doubles as there food. Add slices of potatoes or lettuce to the top of the substrate for their moisture intake. Replace the potatoes or lettuce every 3 days if any is left. You want to start out with 100 to 300 mealworms to have a steady colony going. Keep them at room temp or 70 to 80 F. The mealworm itself is the larvae stage of the darkling beetle. They will eventually pupate which may take anywhere between a week to 3 weeks. You will want to take the pupae out and place in another tub with the same substrate. So that the mealworms wont eat the pupae. They will stay in this stage for 10 to 20 days. Which then they will turn into beetles. The beetles wil mate and lay eggs for about 2weeks or a little longer. You want be able to see the eggs though. The eggs will hatch in about 15 days to 3 weeks. At this time you should be able to see tiny mealworms. It takes them to grow to adult size in about 2 to 3 weeks. Add more substrate when it starts to become like dust. This method should yield a steady colony of mealworms.
