My Reptile Adventure
Posted On 03/07/2008 22:12:25

Two things I have never done before: witten a blog, or had a snake. A friend of mine, Jeff is a reptile freak. He and I became friends because we both love guns, and we both own lots of them. Jeff has lots of guns and lots of Reptiles. So, after a year of hanging out with him I decide to take the plunge myself. He and I had gone to a few gun shows and a few reptile shows. I decided to start with a Baby Red Tailed Boa I got on February 22nd, 2008. I also bought a 20 gallon set up from MB Reptiles. He was very nice and that is where I was exposed to Rg. So, it seems as though I am getting off to a great start.

I feel like my snake gets too cold at night, tank temp close to 76 or 77 degrees. I have a man cave. It is a garage completely converted to a living space. Windows, insulation, lights and portable heat. There lies the problem. I use a propane heater. It is rated for indoors. But, I don't dare leave it on all night. So, I added a tank heater to the end, side of my tank. That does ok, but I still don't think it is hot enough. I am still trying to figure out if I am unnecessarily worried, or if I need to add more heat. Maybe an under tank heater? Think I will ask around and see what I come up with.

BTW, the snake does not seem to mind being heated up in the morning when I turn his/her light on. This added heat brings the tank up in the 80's. It has eaten twice, the day after I brought it home and a week later on Sunday. Seems happy to be held, but of course wants to be everywhere else other than where I want it. It would be nice to have it sexed so I could name it. Guess I will get that done sometime too.
