lunchroom gossip
Posted On 06/27/2008 13:59:25

well, I've been informed lunch room gossip speculation at the Alberta Fish & Wildlife....something (ministry?) is that BC is considering banning all Pituophis, Lampropeltis, venomous snakes, and everything from the family Boidae.  I can see the Boidae getting shot down (come on, that's just retarded) but the others are going to be banned becuase they might become invasive.

I don't really think I need to state my opinion, I'd just be preaching to choir with this crowd anyway.  But is sucks, I love bull snkaes and would also be thrilled to get a hognose, or black milk snake someday.  This thing is really going to suck, it isn't going to stop anyone from owning these animals, if they really cared they'd keep them legal but just make it illegal for pet stores to sell them.  I think taking out the "impulse buy" part of the equasion would go a long way to stoping idiots from getting their hand on them, if someone has to take the time to find a reputable breeder chances are they care enough about a certain species to seek it out.  But there are no more letters I can write (and I've already written quite a few), and no one would listen to me anyway.  I'm just a 20 something girl who workes in a print shop and likes snakes.

My only hope is that PIJAC can  pull a rabbit out of their hat and talk some sense into these ignorant assholes who know nothing about snakes but want to police the rest of us.

ah, the frustration.

well, my reptile club booked four shows at once this weekend. We have the members to support it, I think, the problem is they are all busy. Most of the shows are done by 3 or 4 regulars, and the other club members rarely make it out (oh, except for the Science World shows. Somehow, everyone is free to help at that one *eyeroll*). Of course, I wouldn't complain about the lady who runs rescue being busy, but I have to wonder why some of these other people are even members at all.

So, I have no help for the show I'm doing, I had to enlist my non-reptile savvy friends.

I don't have enough animals, I have to borrow snakes from another member. Which stresses me out all the more, is anything happens to them I'd have a heart attack.

The club logo is MISSING. Don't people have any idea how important these things are?! Apparently, it was given to someone, maybe, it was on a floppy somewhere in a box, and why isn't there a copy somewhere? The hell!! So, I work in a print shop and I'm willing to make and pay for a banner myself, but I can't print one because all that seems to exist is a 72 dpi logo on our shitty web page. Fantastic.

I'm making other signs about snakes too, because while we might have enough members (theoretically) to support 4 shows we don't have the signs to do it.

The web site to. The web site we have now is pretty much garbage, links all over the place, poor design, pop ups, and hasn't been updated in years. I'm willing to make another one, but everything I do has to go through this one lady who takes 3 days to get back to me and she asks for one or two changes. Then in a another 2 days she'll say, "well, how about green?" I could have this done already 5 times over, and *anything* would be better than what we have now. And it looks like crap, because I don't think she's that good at visualizing what it will look like, and asks for things I'd rather not waste my time on. Here is the one I'm working on:

http://h1.ripway.com/vvarious/1wspcr.html

and the current one:

http://www.wspcr.com/

also, I might not even get admin access to update it, so there is a chance I'm doing all this for nothing. Because no one else will update it, or if they do they will make a mess of the code.

I love getting out there any educating about reptiles. But the harder I try with this club the harder I run into brick walls. It's just so frustrating, disorganized, and stagnent.

who wants a drawing?
Posted On 05/01/2008 12:35:38

Short version: I will draw stuff for you if you donate to my favorite reptile rescue.

Well, I'm not making a big deal of this yet, just posting in a few off-the-beaten-path corners of the net (like this blog). But I've decided to draw stuff for people. I made a drawing for xtremedragons beacause she asked me. I don't feel right about asking for money for my art, so instead I requested that a donation be sent to my favorite reptile rescue. I'm not involved in the rescue, so I get nothing out of the money sent. But I know the lady who runs it and the money goes straight into the care of her critters. It's the only registered reptile rescue in all of the greater Vancouver area, and I think it's REALLY important unwanted and sick reptiles have a place to go. Especially since the SPCA can't care for reptiles worth shit (I've seen it, don't get me started on the unheated kiddy pool they stick thier red-ears in, the poor turtles didn't even have an area to escape the water and they just LEFT them like that).

So yes. I'll give anything a try, the amount you send is up to you. This is the first beardie I ever drew to give you an idea of my skill. Suggested donation for something like that would be around $20. I'm easy going and don't mind re-doing things if something is wrong (I have experience working with people from all the art trades I do). Contact me and I and I can give you details. I'm not too good at drawing people, but I'll give any animal a try.

I could, but I shouldn't.

Came across this add on kijiji

http://vancouver.kijiji.ca/c-pets-other-pets-for-sale-3-SNAKES-WITH-CAGES-W0QQAdIdZ48533112

A beauty snake, and an MBK (I'm not interested in the ball)

An MBK is kind of like a black milk, eh?  Too bad the enclosure it comes with is too small for a full grown MBK, and I don't have the room anyway.  And the beauty is aboreal, I don't have any suitable set ups for a snake like that.

I e-mailed him about it anyway.  I should wait and get a hognose, after I come back from vacation.  That would be the smart thing to do.

black milk vs hognose
Posted On 04/09/2008 13:47:35

I think everyone has a list of snakes they want, mine happens to have two fighting it out for top spot.  No matter how many times I go through the pros and cons of each snake, there is never a clean winner.  I might just have to go with the hognose though, because I for the life me I can't find a Canadian breeder of black milks.  And I want to really know who I'm getting a snake from, and not just because it takes two years before you'd ever find out if someone sent you an ordinary milk by mistake.  If it's something that's being shipped, I'd like the breeder to help pick the calmest snake of the clutch, it's important to me because I'd like to increase the possibility of the snake coming to the educational reptile events I help with (when it's grown, of course).

*sigh* I spend way too much time day dreaming about snakes I want.  I need to make room for them first anyway, I need to get working on making a stackable viv.
